AIS PDF Password Format (Income Tax, 2026)
Your PAN in lower case followed by your date of birth (or date of incorporation/formation) in DDMMYYYY format, with no spaces.
| Document | Password | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Annual Information Statement (AIS) PDF, individual | PAN in lower case + date of birth (DDMMYYYY), no spaces e.g. PAN ABCPK1234L, born 15 May 1990: abcpk1234l15051990 | Confirmed by the issuer Source |
| AIS PDF, non-individual (company, firm, trust, HUF etc.) | PAN in lower case + date of incorporation/formation (DDMMYYYY), no spaces e.g. PAN AAFCR5678Q, incorporated 2 April 2012: aafcr5678q02042012 | Confirmed by the issuer Source |
| AIS JSON file imported into the offline AIS utility | PAN in UPPER case + date of birth/incorporation (DDMMYYYY), no spaces e.g. PAN ABCPK1234L, born 15 May 1990: ABCPK1234L15051990 | Confirmed by the issuer Source |
| Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS) PDF | Commonly reported to be the same as the AIS PDF (PAN in lower case + DDMMYYYY); not stated on the official page e.g. abcpk1234l15051990 | Commonly reported – not confirmed by the issuer Source |
The AIS PDF password is your PAN in lower case followed by your date of birth in DDMMYYYY format, with no spaces. For a made-up PAN ABCPK1234L and a date of birth of 15 May 1990, the password is abcpk1234l15051990.
As of October 2026, the Income Tax Department states this format in its guide Steps to access AIS information online.
The password format
The Annual Information Statement (AIS) is downloaded from the income-tax e-filing portal (AIS tab after you log in). If you choose PDF, the file is password protected. The department's guide says the password is the combination of:
- Your PAN in lower case (all ten characters, letters typed small), and
- Your date of birth for individuals, or the date of incorporation/formation for companies, firms and other non-individuals, written as DDMMYYYY.
There is no space or symbol between the two parts. The department's own example is PAN AAAAA1234A and date of birth 21 January 1991, which gives aaaaa1234a21011991.
Worked example
Priya Sharma has the made-up PAN BQKPS4821M and was born on 7 September 1988.
- PAN in lower case:
bqkps4821m - Date of birth as DDMMYYYY:
07091988 - Password:
bqkps4821m07091988
For a company with PAN AAFCR5678Q incorporated on 2 April 2012, the password would be aafcr5678q02042012.
AIS JSON uses upper case
If you download AIS as a JSON file and import it into the department's offline AIS utility, the password is different: the PAN in upper case plus the same DDMMYYYY date, for example BQKPS4821M07091988. This is stated in the department's guide Steps to access AIS information offline. Mixing up the two is the most common reason the password "doesn't work".
What about TIS?
The Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS) sits next to AIS on the same dashboard (see the department's AIS/TIS FAQ). The official page we checked does not state a separate password for the TIS PDF. It is commonly reported that the TIS PDF uses the same password as the AIS PDF (PAN in lower case plus DDMMYYYY), but we could not confirm this from an official source, so try that first and check the portal if it fails.
If the password doesn't work
- PAN letters must be small.
BQKPS4821M07091988opens the JSON, not the PDF. - Use two digits for day and month. 7 September is
0709, not79. - Use the date on your PAN record. The date of birth the department has against your PAN is what counts, even if it differs from other documents. You can see it in your profile on the e-filing portal.
- Non-individuals use the date of incorporation or formation, not a director's or partner's date of birth.
- Re-download. If a file was partly downloaded, it may not open at all. Download it again from the AIS tab.
For AIS questions, the department lists the AIS and Reporting Portal helpline 1800 103 4215 on its AIS FAQ page.
Removing the password so you don't have to type it again
Once the file is open, you can save a copy without the password so you are not typing it every time you need the document. On iPhone, iPad or Mac, UnKey does this offline: you enter the password once, it saves an unlocked copy, and nothing is uploaded anywhere. It only works when you already know the password; it does not guess or crack passwords. Other PDF tools, such as printing to a new PDF from your PDF viewer, can do the same job. Keep the unlocked copy somewhere private, because anyone who gets it can read it.
