e-Aadhaar PDF Password Format (2026)
The first four letters of your name as printed on Aadhaar, in capital letters, followed by your year of birth (YYYY).
| Document | Password | Status |
|---|---|---|
| e-Aadhaar PDF (downloaded from UIDAI) | First 4 letters of name in CAPITAL letters + year of birth (YYYY). Spaces and dots in the name count as characters; names shorter than 4 letters are used in full. e.g. Ravi Kumar, born 15 May 1990: RAVI1990 | Confirmed by the issuer Source |
The e-Aadhaar PDF password is the first four letters of your name in capital letters, followed by your year of birth (YYYY). For example, Ravi Kumar born in 1990 would type RAVI1990.
As of October 2026, this is the rule UIDAI gives in its own FAQ, What is the password of e-Aadhaar?.
The password format
UIDAI says the password is "a combination of the first 4 letters of name in CAPITAL and the year of birth (YYYY)". In practice that means:
- Take your name exactly as it is printed on your Aadhaar.
- Use the first four characters, in capital letters, even if you normally write your name in lower case.
- Add the four-digit year you were born. Not the full date, only the year.
- No spaces before the year, and nothing else at the end.
Worked examples
UIDAI's FAQ gives four cases that cover most of the tricky names. Here they are with made-up people:
| Name on Aadhaar | Year of birth | Password |
|---|---|---|
| RAVI KUMAR | 1990 | RAVI1990 |
| SAI KIRAN | 1985 | SAIK1985 (the space is skipped and the next letter is used) |
| K. MEENA | 1978 | K.ME1978 (the dot counts as one of the four characters) |
| RIA | 2001 | RIA2001 (name shorter than four letters: use all of it) |
Two details from UIDAI's examples are worth noticing. A name like "Sai Kumar" becomes SAIK: the four letters run across the space. A name with an initial and a dot, like "P. Kumar", keeps the dot: P.KU.
If the password doesn't work
- Caps lock and case. The letters must be capitals.
Ravi1990will not work;RAVI1990will. - Use the name on your Aadhaar, not your everyday name. If your Aadhaar says "Ravindra Kumar", the password starts with
RAVI; if it says "R. Kumar", it starts withR.KU. Check the name on an older printout or on the myAadhaar portal. - Check the initial and dot. If your name begins with an initial, try it with the dot exactly where Aadhaar puts it.
- Year, not date. Only four digits of the year. If your Aadhaar shows only a year of birth, use that year.
- Recently updated details. If you changed your name or date of birth, a newly downloaded e-Aadhaar uses the updated details. An old file you saved earlier uses the details from that time.
- Typing on a phone. Phone keyboards sometimes add a space or capitalise only the first letter. Type slowly, or paste the password from a notes app.
If none of this works, download a fresh copy of e-Aadhaar from UIDAI's official site (myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in) and try again. For help, UIDAI's helpline is 1947.
Is it safe to share e-Aadhaar?
The password exists to stop someone who finds the file from reading your Aadhaar number and address. If you are sending e-Aadhaar for KYC, send it only to the organisation that asked for it. UIDAI also offers a masked Aadhaar download that hides most of the Aadhaar number, which is often enough for KYC.
Removing the password so you don't have to type it again
Once the file is open, you can save a copy without the password so you are not typing it every time you need the document. On iPhone, iPad or Mac, UnKey does this offline: you enter the password once, it saves an unlocked copy, and nothing is uploaded anywhere. It only works when you already know the password; it does not guess or crack passwords. Other PDF tools, such as printing to a new PDF from your PDF viewer, can do the same job. Keep the unlocked copy somewhere private, because anyone who gets it can read it.
