The ITR-V (income tax return acknowledgement) PDF is commonly reported to open with your PAN in lower case followed by your date of birth as DDMMYYYY. For a made-up PAN ABCPK1234L and a date of birth of 15 May 1990, that would be abcpk1234l15051990.

As of October 2026, we could not find this format stated on an official Income Tax Department page, so treat it as the usual pattern rather than a confirmed rule. If the PDF came by email, the email from the department is the place to check.

The password format

After you file a return, the e-filing portal emails an acknowledgement (ITR-V) and lets you download it again from the portal. Tax filing sites and many users report that this PDF uses the same pattern as several other income-tax PDFs:

  1. Your PAN in small letters (all ten characters), then
  2. Your date of birth as DDMMYYYY (for companies and firms, reportedly the date of incorporation or formation).

This matches the officially documented password for the AIS PDF, which is PAN in lower case plus date of birth, and the TRACES rule for intimations emailed to taxpayers (PAN in small letters followed by date of birth). Neither of those pages mentions ITR-V, though, so the ITR-V format remains unconfirmed.

Worked example

Priya Sharma has the made-up PAN BQKPS4821M and was born on 7 September 1988.

  • PAN in lower case: bqkps4821m
  • Date of birth as DDMMYYYY: 07091988
  • Password to try: bqkps4821m07091988

Where to get the ITR-V

The department's Know your ITR status guide explains how to view filed returns and download the acknowledgement after logging in to the e-filing portal. If you still need to verify the return, see the department's How to e-Verify guide; e-verifying online avoids posting a signed ITR-V.

If the password doesn't work

  • Check the email. Acknowledgement emails often say how to open the attachment. Treat that as the final word.
  • Small letters for the PAN. Try bqkps4821m07091988 rather than BQKPS4821M07091988.
  • Date as per PAN. Use the date of birth on your PAN record, with leading zeros, day first.
  • Company, firm or trust. Try the date of incorporation or formation instead of a date of birth.
  • Download a fresh copy. Log in to the e-filing portal and download the acknowledgement again from your filed returns.
  • Still stuck? Contact the e-filing helpdesk listed on incometax.gov.in.

Removing the password so you don't have to type it again

Once the file is open, you can save a copy without the password so you are not typing it every time you need the document. On iPhone, iPad or Mac, UnKey does this offline: you enter the password once, it saves an unlocked copy, and nothing is uploaded anywhere. It only works when you already know the password; it does not guess or crack passwords. Other PDF tools, such as printing to a new PDF from your PDF viewer, can do the same job. Keep the unlocked copy somewhere private, because anyone who gets it can read it.

Questions

What is the password for the ITR-V PDF?

It is commonly reported to be your PAN in lower case followed by your date of birth in DDMMYYYY format. We could not confirm this on an official page, so also check the email the ITR-V came with.

Is the ITR-V password the same as the AIS password?

It is commonly reported to follow the same pattern (PAN in lower case plus DDMMYYYY), which is officially documented for AIS but not for ITR-V.

Where can I download my ITR-V again?

Log in to the income-tax e-filing portal and open your filed returns; the department's ITR status guide shows the steps.
