Tap the PDF to preview it and enter the password, or use the Share button to save it to Files or send it to an app such as UnKey.

To open a password-protected PDF on iPhone, tap the attachment and enter the password when you're asked. If the in-app viewer doesn't ask, or you want to keep the file, use the Share button to save it to Files or open it in another app. Every route below still needs the correct password.

From Apple Mail

  1. Open the email and tap the PDF attachment to preview it. Enter the password if asked.
  2. To keep it, touch and hold the attachment and choose Save to Files. To open it in another app, choose Share, then pick the app (Apple: Download email attachments in Mail on iPhone).

Tip: in Mail you can filter a mailbox to show only messages with attachments, which helps when you're hunting for an old statement.

From Gmail

  1. Open the message and tap the attachment to open it (Gmail Help: Open & download attachments on iPhone).
  2. If Gmail's viewer can't show it because of the password, use the share or "open in" option to pass the file to iOS. From the iOS Share sheet you can choose Save to Files or an app such as Preview or UnKey.
  3. Gmail also offers Save to Drive, which uploads the file to your Google Drive. It's convenient, but it puts the file in the cloud.

Button names in Gmail change from time to time. If you can't find them, look for a Share icon (a square with an arrow) or a three-dot menu.

From WhatsApp

  1. Tap the document in the chat. WhatsApp shows a preview, and for a protected PDF it may show nothing useful or ask for the password.
  2. Tap the Share button in the preview and choose Save to Files, or pick an app from the Share sheet.
  3. Open it from Files and enter the password.

If you received the PDF from someone else, ask them for the password in a separate message or a call, not in the same chat as the file.

Opening the saved file

  • Files: tap the PDF and enter the password when prompted.
  • Preview (iOS 26 and later): browse to the file under Browse or Recents and tap it (Apple: Open and view PDFs in Preview on iPhone).
  • UnKey: choose UnKey from the Share sheet in Mail, Gmail, WhatsApp or Files. Enter the password and you can view the PDF or save an unlocked copy. It works offline, so the file isn't uploaded. You can save the password so that later statements in the same format open with Face ID.

If it says the password is wrong

  • Type it by hand. Pasted passwords sometimes pick up a trailing space.
  • Check capital letters. Passwords are case-sensitive.
  • Check the date format: DDMMYYYY, DDMMYY or DDMM.
  • Read the original email or SMS from the issuer, which usually explains the format.
  • If the file was forwarded on WhatsApp, the sender may have the password, or may have forwarded an already-unlocked copy that's now corrupted. Ask them to resend it.

If the PDF won't open at all

A download that didn't finish can look like a password problem. Delete the copy, download it again on a good connection, and try once more. If the sender's app compresses files, ask them to send it as a document rather than as media.

Questions

Why does WhatsApp show a blank page for my PDF?

WhatsApp's preview may not handle password-protected PDFs. Save the file to Files or open it in another app from the Share sheet, then enter the password there.

Can I open a protected PDF from Gmail without downloading it?

Gmail's viewer may not open password-protected files. Saving the file to Files, or opening it in an app through Share, is the reliable route.

Is it safe to open a statement PDF in UnKey?

UnKey works offline on your iPhone and doesn't upload files. It only opens PDFs whose password you enter.
