Groww's password-protected reports, including contract notes, open with your PAN in capital letters. If Ravi Kumar's PAN is ABCPK1234L, the password is ABCPK1234L.

As of October 2026, Groww's help page What's the password to open password-protected reports? says: "The password to open password-protected reports is your PAN Number in capital letters."

The password format

Groww uses one rule for its password-protected reports: your ten-character PAN with the letters in upper case. No date of birth, no spaces, nothing extra.

Groww's page on where to get the contract note repeats this for contract notes: "The password to open the report is your PAN number in capital letters." It also says an additional contract note is emailed to you at the end of each trading day; that email copy uses the same rule.

Worked example

  • Account holder (made-up): Priya Sharma
  • PAN: BQKPS4821M
  • Password for her contract note or report: BQKPS4821M

Downloading a contract note in Groww

Groww's help page gives these steps: open your profile, choose Reports, find Contract Note under Transactions, pick the date and tap Download. The PDF asks for the PAN password when you open it.

Mutual fund statements are different

If you are trying to open a mutual fund Consolidated Account Statement (CAS) that you requested from CAMS or KFintech, that file uses the password you typed in the request form, not your PAN. A depository CAS from NSDL or CDSL opens with the first holder's PAN in capitals. Check who sent the email before trying passwords.

If the password doesn't work

  • Capital letters. bqkps4821m will fail; type BQKPS4821M.
  • No spaces. Watch for a space added by autocorrect or copy-paste.
  • Right PAN. Use the PAN of the person whose Groww account generated the report.
  • Re-download. If the file came through a forwarded email or chat app, download a fresh copy from the Reports section.
  • Still stuck? Use the Contact us option in Groww's help centre.

Why reports are protected

Contract notes and statements carry your name, PAN, client code and every trade. Brokers protect them with a password so that a wrongly delivered or forwarded email cannot be read by just anyone. The trade-off is that you have to type the PAN every time, which is why many people keep an unlocked copy for their own records, for example for their CA when filing returns.

Contract note passwords at different brokers

If you trade through more than one broker, the rules differ, which is the usual cause of a wrong-password error. From each broker's own help pages:

BrokerContract note passwordExample for PAN ABCPK1234L
ZerodhaPAN in capital lettersABCPK1234L
GrowwPAN in capital lettersABCPK1234L
UpstoxPAN in lower caseabcpk1234l

Look at who sent the email before you start typing. The broker's name is printed on the contract note itself, but you only see it after the file opens, so the sender address is the quicker clue.

Removing the password so you don't have to type it again

Once the file is open, you can save a copy without the password so you are not typing it every time you need the statement, for example when you hand it to your CA at tax time. On iPhone, iPad or Mac, UnKey does this offline: you enter the password once, it saves an unlocked copy, and nothing is uploaded anywhere. It only works when you already know the password; it does not guess or crack passwords. Other PDF tools, such as printing to a new PDF from your PDF viewer, can do the same job. Keep the unlocked copy somewhere private, because it shows your holdings and PAN.
