The NSDL and CDSL e-CAS PDF opens with the PAN of the first or sole demat account holder, in capital letters. If Ravi Kumar's PAN is ABCPK1234L, his CAS password is ABCPK1234L.

As of October 2026, both depositories say this in their FAQs: NSDL and CDSL.

The password format

The Consolidated Account Statement (CAS) from a depository lists your shares and other securities across demat accounts, and usually your mutual fund holdings too, linked to your PAN. It comes from whichever depository holds your demat account, NSDL or CDSL, and the rule is the same for both.

  • NSDL: "NSDL e-CAS would be a password protected digitally signed PDF file. Investor will be required to enter PAN of the first/sole demat account holder in CAPITAL letters as a password."
  • CDSL: "Investor will be required to enter PAN of the first/sole demat account holder in CAPITAL letters as a password to open the eCAS."

So the password is just the ten characters of the PAN, five letters, four digits and a letter, all letters in upper case. No date of birth, no spaces.

Worked example

Account (made-up)First holder's PANPassword
Single account of Ravi KumarABCPK1234LABCPK1234L
Joint account, Priya Sharma first, Ravi Kumar secondBQKPS4821MBQKPS4821M

In a joint account, only the first holder's PAN works, even if the second holder is the one reading the statement.

If the password doesn't work

  • Capital letters. abcpk1234l will not open it; ABCPK1234L will.
  • First holder's PAN. For joint accounts, use the PAN of whoever is listed first.
  • Is it really a depository CAS? A mutual fund CAS you requested from CAMS or KFintech opens with the password you chose in the request form, not your PAN. A broker's contract note or report may use its own rule. Check the sender of the email.
  • Minor or HUF accounts. Use the PAN of the account holder as recorded with the depository; if unsure, ask your depository participant (broker or bank).
  • Duplicate copy. NSDL says you can download past e-CAS statements by registering for its IDeAS facility; CDSL says past CAS can be downloaded from the CAS tab on its website.

How the CAS reaches you

The depository emails the CAS to the address registered with your demat account. Whether it comes from NSDL or CDSL, the password rule is the same, so you do not need to work out which depository sent it before typing your PAN. Because the password is only your PAN, anyone who knows your PAN can open the file. Treat a forwarded CAS like any other financial document and do not post it in group chats.

Removing the password so you don't have to type it again

Once the file is open, you can save a copy without the password so you are not typing it every time you need the statement, for example when you hand it to your CA at tax time. On iPhone, iPad or Mac, UnKey does this offline: you enter the password once, it saves an unlocked copy, and nothing is uploaded anywhere. It only works when you already know the password; it does not guess or crack passwords. Other PDF tools, such as printing to a new PDF from your PDF viewer, can do the same job. Keep the unlocked copy somewhere private, because it shows your holdings and PAN.
