Upstox contract notes open with your PAN in lower case (small letters). If Ravi Kumar's PAN is ABCPK1234L, he types abcpk1234l.

As of October 2026, Upstox's help page How can I access and download the contract note? says: "To access contract note, use your PAN (lowercase)."

The password format

A contract note lists every trade you made in a day with prices, brokerage and taxes. Upstox says it emails the contract note to your registered email within 24 hours of trading, in the format SEBI prescribes. The PDF is protected with your PAN, all ten characters, with the letters in lower case. This is the opposite of Zerodha and Groww, which use the PAN in capitals, so it trips up people who use more than one broker.

Worked example

• Account holder (made-up): Priya Sharma
• PAN: BQKPS4821M
• Upstox contract note password: bqkps4821m

Upstox's own example uses the PAN ABCD1234X and the password abcd1234x. The digits stay the same; only the letters change to lower case.

Downloading a contract note in Upstox

Upstox's help page lists these steps in the app: go to My account, then Reports, then Miscellaneous reports, set the report type to CONTRACT and choose the note you want. The downloaded file uses the same lower-case PAN password.

If the password doesn't work

• Lower case. Type the PAN letters small. BQKPS4821M will fail; bqkps4821m will work.
• Phone keyboards often capitalise the first letter automatically. Check the first character before tapping OK.
• Right PAN. Use the PAN of the person who holds that Upstox account.
• Other Upstox documents. This rule is for contract notes. For other statements, check the email they came with. A depository CAS from CDSL or NSDL opens with the PAN in capitals instead.

Contract note passwords at different brokers

If you trade through more than one broker, the rules differ, which is the usual cause of a wrong-password error. From each broker's own help pages:

Look at who sent the email before you start typing. The broker's name is printed on the contract note itself, but you only see it after the file opens, so the sender address is the quicker clue.

Removing the password so you don't have to type it again

Once the file is open, you can save a copy without the password so you are not typing it every time you need the statement, for example when you hand it to your CA at tax time.
