Kotak Securities contract notes open with your PAN in capital letters, with no spaces. If Ravi Kumar's PAN is ABCPK1234L, he types ABCPK1234L.

As of October 2026, Kotak's support page What are the key enhancements made in contract note? says the contract note now comes as a password-protected PDF and tells you to "Use your PAN (in uppercase, without spaces) to open the file."

The password format

The password is your 10-character PAN exactly as printed on your PAN card: five letters, four digits, one letter. All letters must be upper case and nothing goes before or after it.

Worked example

  • Account holder (made-up): Priya Sharma
  • PAN: BQKPS4821M
  • Contract note password: BQKPS4821M

What changed in 2025

Kotak's page explains that for trades on or after 1 April 2025 the contract note was redesigned. The points that matter when you open the file:

  • It is now a locked PDF. Earlier, Kotak's contract note was an unprotected web page. Now it is a password-protected PDF, which is why you may be seeing a password prompt for the first time.
  • One note for all segments. Equity, F&O and commodity trades appear in one document. If you traded commodities, a final note is sent after the commodity market closes, and that final note is the one that counts.
  • Every fill listed. Each execution is shown separately rather than averaged per order.
  • Contract note doubles as the bill. No separate derivative bill is issued.

If you have older Kotak contract notes saved from before April 2025, they may not have a password at all.

If the password doesn't work

  • Caps lock. The PAN letters must be capitals. abcpk1234l will not work where ABCPK1234L is expected.
  • No spaces. Phone keyboards and copy-paste sometimes add a space at the end. Type the PAN by hand if pasting fails.
  • Whose PAN? Use the PAN of the account holder. For a parent's or spouse's account, it is their PAN, not yours.
  • Is it really a contract note? A Consolidated Account Statement (CAS) from NSDL or CDSL, or a mutual fund CAS from CAMS or KFintech, follows its own rules. Check who sent the email.
  • HUF or corporate accounts. Use the PAN of the HUF or company that holds the account.
  • Still stuck? Check the email the contract note came with, then contact Kotak Securities support through the Kotak Neo app or website.

Contract note passwords at other brokers

If you trade through more than one broker, the rules differ, and that is the usual cause of a wrong-password error:

Removing the password so you don't have to type it again

Once the file is open, you can save a copy without the password so you are not typing it every time you need the contract note, for example when you hand a year of them to your CA. On iPhone, iPad or Mac, UnKey does this offline: you enter the password once, it saves an unlocked copy, and nothing is uploaded anywhere. It only works when you already know the password; it does not guess or crack passwords. On Android, the file opens with the password in Google Files, Google Drive or Adobe Acrobat Reader, and you can usually save a copy without the password by printing it to PDF. Keep the unlocked copy somewhere private, because it shows your trades and PAN.

Questions

Your PAN in capital letters, with no spaces, as Kotak's support page states.

Why is my Kotak contract note suddenly password-protected?

For trades from 1 April 2025, Kotak moved the contract note from an unprotected web page to a password-protected PDF.

Is the password case-sensitive?

Yes. Type the PAN letters in upper case.

I have both equity and commodity trades. Which note do I use?

Kotak says commodity traders get an additional final note after the commodity market closes, and that final note governs your obligations.
