Online unlockers process your file on someone else's server, while offline tools such as Preview, Chrome's Save as PDF, qpdf or UnKey work on your own device; airplane mode is a quick way to tell which is which.

An online PDF unlocker uploads your document, and usually the password too, to a server, removes the password there and sends the file back. An offline unlocker does the same job on your own phone or computer, so nothing leaves the device. For bank statements, tax papers and ID documents, offline is the safer choice, and free offline options exist on every major platform.

What actually gets shared online

  • The whole document: account number, address, balance and every transaction.
  • The password, which is often built from your name, date of birth or customer ID. Those are useful to fraudsters on their own.
  • Metadata such as your IP address and the time of upload.

Reputable services say they delete files quickly. iLovePDF's FAQ, for example, says files are kept for a maximum of 2 hours (iLovePDF FAQ). That's a promise you can't verify, and you're trusting the service's security and staff in the meantime.

How to tell if a tool is offline

  1. Airplane mode test. Turn on airplane mode (or disconnect Wi-Fi), then unlock a file. If it still works, the processing happens on your device.
  2. Look for an upload step. A progress bar that says “uploading”, or a web page you drag files into, means the file is going to a server.
  3. Read the privacy policy for words like “our servers”, “retain” or “delete after”. Offline tools have nothing to delete.
  4. Check the app's privacy label on the App Store or the data safety section on Google Play. It shows what the developer says it collects.

A website isn't automatically online-only. Some run entirely in the browser. But you can't easily check, so the airplane mode test is the honest answer.

Free offline options

DeviceOffline method
MacPreview: File > Export with no open password (Apple), or Print > Save as PDF (Apple). See the Mac guide.
iPhone, iPadPreview's Lock setting or the Print screen workaround. See the iPhone guide.
WindowsEdge or Chrome: Ctrl + P, Save as PDF. See the Windows guide.
AndroidOpen in a PDF viewer, Print, Save as PDF. See the Android guide.
Any computerqpdf --decrypt, a free command-line tool (qpdf docs).

Chrome's Save as PDF works in the browser without uploading anything, as long as you choose Save as PDF and not Save to Google Drive (Google: Print from Chrome).

When an online tool is fine

For a public brochure or a document with nothing personal in it, an online tool is convenient and the risk is low. The line is personal data: if you wouldn't post the file in a group chat, don't upload it to a stranger's server.

Offline isn't the end of it

An unlocked file opens for anyone who gets it, wherever it was unlocked. Keep unlocked statements in a private folder, don't forward them, and see is it safe to remove a PDF password for good habits. UnKey works fully offline on iPhone, iPad and Mac. It uploads nothing, only removes passwords you already know, and keeps saved passwords in the device Keychain behind Face ID or Touch ID.

Questions

Are online PDF unlockers illegal?

No, but they upload your document. The concern is privacy, not legality.

How can I be sure an app doesn't upload my file?

Turn on airplane mode and try it. If it still unlocks the file, the work is happening on your device.

Is Chrome's Save as PDF offline?

Yes, when you open a file from your computer and choose Save as PDF. The Save to Google Drive destination does upload a copy to your Drive.

Do online tools crack forgotten passwords?

Some claim to, but modern PDF encryption makes that slow or impossible, and it means handing over your file. See what to do if you forgot a PDF password.
